As for Coral...I'd say he has to come to terms with her death at some point. He must accept that while she's not with him any more, some part of her is in Nemo and by being a good father he's honoring her memory. If he thought having Dory in his life in a partnering fashion was good for the family, then he would still be honoring Coral's memory. Sorry, but I disagree. I agree with the thought of him honoring her memory by being a good father, but I think that since he wants to keep that memory intact, he is cautious about finding other relationships. He doesn't have any other ones between the attack and Nemo's first day of school, and besides, I can't really imagine Marlin and Dory really......hitting it off, I guess

JESUS Rewatching Nemo at my summer camp, I honestly think that ending scene with Dory sobbing about Marlin leaving might as well have been a love confession. GOD IT'S SO SAD.

CAPSLOCK.
It did sound like it, didn't it? A lot of folks on Pixar Planet noted that while they hate D/M, they thought Dory was about to confess she was in love.
I think she was confessing she needed him, just like Marlin needed her to show him the way. And that's why I love this pairing; as weird and difficult as it can get, they really do need each other. It's not in a romantic fashion, of course, but it's a good basis for a pairing...much better than some of the other stuff out there, at any rate.

But what really made that scene sad, if you were to say it was meant to be romantic, is the fact of how Marlin replied. It's was sorta like...
Dory: I love you. Marlin: I don't.
Except more dramatic. And stuff.

Marlin was basically dead inside when she said all that. He just couldn't stand being attached to anyone anymore...too much heartache.
Poor thing. Both of them.

Well, yeah. You lose your own son AND your wife, you're bound to be tired of losing things. That, and maybe he suspected he was just prone to make people get killed or something. Like he's really unlucky...
